Just to be 100% fair, Evan, she yelled “THAT’S WHAT I’M FUCKIN’ TALKING ABOUT!!” as she came off the ice. I watched it live, so it did not get censored. She had the time of her life out there and it was well deserved!
Had my first chance to see her performance this morning. OMFG! I know nothing about skating and even I could see the immense skill and calm joy as she skated. Literally brought me to tears.
What's even worse is when they whine about USA athletes hugging their competitors. They don't seem to understand that an elite skier from the USA has more in common with their Chinese competitor than they do with anyone bitching on twitter. The elite competitive circuits for these sports are traveling circuses and circus folk live in very insular communities and don't mix with the punters.
Yes! That and ... have they never noticed how football players and basketball players from opposing teams often hug and greet each other? It's not just what they have in common, but -- and this is another thing people who don't understand excellence don't understand -- is that when you get to a certain level in just about anything, it's highly likely that they've trained in the same facilities, under the same coaches, they see each other at every competition, hell, they. might have been roommates at some point.

The literal only thing they thought they had was "white people are better than everyone" and time and again they're shown that's not them. No athlete I've ever trained with (made nationals 3xs in gymnastics in my youth) acted like that. We literally competed with ourselves and then as a team against other kick ass teams. We know we're all fucking amazing. And we're all different shades. Olympic athletes are the best of the best. Most are doing what they compete in because they literally LOVE it. MAGA doesn't understand that. MAGA wouldn't give up anything to win something 🙄 meanwhile Olympic athletes literally give up everything for it.

MAGA hates excellence in any form because they want to believe they are the most special people without actually doing the work to become excellent. The people who say they’ve been saved and washed clean therefore they can do whatever they want - lie, cheat, get divorced, shame others for getting divorced, etc. People who have been told that if you do x, y will happen, but no one tells them x has variables so sometimes x+z(a) = y. Or that a system is so stacked against them that x will never equal Y.
It’s so ironic to me that MAGA is all-in on what is patently anti-American: anti-free speech, anti-separation of church and state, and anti-democracy. EVERYONE ELSE who believes in the Constitution are the patriots, not these Christian Nationalists who think everyone who isn’t on board with their agenda is out to get them. No, dudes. We’re not out to get you. We’re simply pointing out your racist, misogynist, and homophobic ways are out of touch with just about everyone who isn’t you.

I watched that skating performance last night and I was floored by how amazing each and every one of the competitors’ programs was. Beautiful. Athletic. Graceful. Alyssa Liu was on fire. And the joy on her face said it all and was the perfect rejoinder to all the hate. Good for her, and congrats on the gold!
