I also in this edition said a couple words at the beginning about the events of this weekend, the apparent assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Pennsylvania. It goes without saying that we don’t support violence on our side. We don’t want harm to come to Trump or his supporters. We want them to be better humans. (Probably not possible for Trump.)
But we also aren’t going to stop talking about the fact that he’s a dangerous a man, a dictator wannabe, who along with the Christian nationalist and fascist men and women who prop him up, have designs on destroying this country. Timothy Snyder says in his seminal work On Tyranny that one of the first rules of resisting fascists is not to obey in advance. To quiet our criticisms of the actual plans and policies Trump and his MAGA cohort have — the revenge, the retribution, the authoritarian coup that is Project 2025 — would be to obey in advance.
Hard pass on that one.
