The Opus Dei crazies hating him was the only thing on my bingo card.

Don't forget the Society of St. Pius X and the sedevacantists. I guess to them, the chair remains vacant. If Opus Dei did not have so many very rich friends and subversive organizations, we could just ignore them. Sadly, we cannot.

I recently talked to a couple who had met up on J-Date. I said if I signed up for something like Catholic Tinder, it would be nothing but Opus Dei type guys.

Ugh. I always hope there aren’t that many in that group, but you may be right.

While the Pope is totally irrelevant to me, I am glad to see he’s already riling the MAGAs.

Evan, I’m a long-lapsed Catholic turned atheist, not because I hated God, but because I studied theology deeply enough to watch the scaffolding collapse. That said, the teachings of Jesus (not the weaponized MAGA version) still sit at the root of my moral framework. Blessed are the peacemakers isn’t a campaign slogan. It’s a dare.

And you nailed it. The MAGAverse doesn’t hate Pope Leo because of who he is. They hate him because he dares to evoke that Jesus, the one who flipped tables, walked with the outcasts, and told the empire to go pound sand. The Jesus who chose fugitives, sex workers, and lepers as his inner circle over the temple elite. The one who would be banned from half the states for wearing sandals and feeding immigrants without a license.

The hissy fits from Hannity, Cernovich, Loomer, and every other theocratic fangirl are predictable. They can’t stomach a Christlike figure unless he’s strapped in Kevlar and carrying a Roman sword. They want a white Jesus with a border wall and an AR-15, not one who hangs out with queer folks and tells rich men to sell everything.

And the wild part is, Pope Leo isn’t even that radical. But even moderate compassion sets these people off like vampires facing garlic. They don’t fear socialism. They fear empathy. They fear being reminded that their gospel is a grift.

So yes, it’s going to be interesting. And you can bet I’ll have a front-row seat to every meltdown, communion wine in one hand, popcorn in the other.

Thanks for keeping the spotlight burning. Let’s keep dragging their hypocrisy into the daylight, one flaming hot take at a time.

Left Rome for Canterbury, decades ago, and rarely have anything to say about the Roman Church. However, if Loomer hates the new Pope, he must be a pretty fantastic person, and I will be happy for all those who follow him, and look to him as their leader.

Loomer was happy when she heard the new pope was going to focus on poverty, hunger, suffering, and sickness. But then she found out he was AGAINST those things. Oh well.

What the fuck do magas think that Jesus said for his followers to do? It's quite clear that they've never read the Bible. OK, maybe the fire and brimestone parts, but not the "love your neighbor" parts.

I'm withholding my approval of the conclave's decision until I am assured that this guy did not choose his popename "Leo" as a homage to Leonard Leo.

According to someone from The Tablet who knows about these things, he chose the name because of Pope Leo XIII. Wikipedia says that pope ‘outlined the rights of workers to a fair wage, safe working conditions, and the formation of trade unions’ and ‘became popularly titled as the "Social Pope" and the "Pope of the Workers"…’ Sounds pretty cool to me!

I’ve found the “WWJD” movement pretty confounding. You don’t need to ask - he already told us! Leo XIV sounds promising on many fronts.

Well, if he's Catholic, he's either not related or some ancestor or other converted. My husband is descended from a Huguenot who came to the Boston area and was fruitful and multiplied. There was a detour through England so the Brits could screw up the name, so it doesn't look French any more.
