Tim Walz is my dad. He's my Scoutmaster. He's my best friend's husband. He's my next door neighbor who in fact has lent me his weed whacker when ours crapped out. And not all of those men are white guys. They're black guys and Hispanic guys. Didn't matter. They're just guys doin' dad stuff. I turned out to be... not a guy, but those are the guys I wanted to be when I thought I was a guy. That's the guy I want my partner's nephews who spend a lot more time online than with other people to see and think, hey, he's a pretty neat guy. Leave the peacocking and buffoonery for the insecure couchfuckers. Tim Walz is a guy, and he knows it, and he's happy being that guy. May more men find that sort of internal peace.

Thank you, I was trying to think of a way to say what you just said and you said it much, much, better than I could have.

The #BigDadEnergy hash on Threads was my everything. I think I spent 5 straight hours soaking myself in it. I had a dad like Walz- a teacher, a baseball coach, a mentor, a joke teller (oh the humor), the kind of man who, after he died at 55 of a brain aneurysm had 1,000+ people at his memorial service and about whom at least 1-2 people a year would reach out - for over a decade- to tell me and my mom and my brother how much he meant to them, including, notably, a player from the OPPOSING TEAM who blew a pop fly to lose the State tourney final game to my dad's school, after which my dad wrote him a handwritten letter to tell him not to take it to heart and, if he insists, also remember that he was the pitcher who got their team TO the finals so he should be proud as well). Having Walz on the ticket feels like the country getting to have a dad like mine.

Also, these MAGA creeps cannot stop stepping on their own dicks, BECAUSE they are weirdo creeps. JD Vance following Kamala's plane around? Stalking her event to event? My god. Women KNOW that guy. Every one of us. He's the guy you give a rictus smile to while moving away as quickly and unobtrusively as possible, because you can sense the violence underneath. The contrast could not be starker and the memes prove it: as one said, "Walz is the guy who'd walk you home from the party. JD Vance is the one he'd be walking you home to be safe from."

That last line I feel in my gut. JD Vance is the guy you tell the bartender to call the Angel Line so you can get away from him.

How fortunate to have a wonderful dad! I'm so sorry you didn't get to have him very long, but it shows what kind of person he was in the way you speak of him. <3

I had him 27 years. As the memes about Tim Walz show, I got lucky. Thank you for honoring my dad. LFG for Kamala and Tim!

I'm sorry that you didn't have him longer, and that he didn't have more time; I'm so glad that he made life better for so many people; and I appreciate your telling us about him. Take care.

🎯Nailed it. So sorry about your dad, he sounds wonderful.

“The story is that Gov. Walz signed a bill last year requiring that all schools provide free menstrual hygiene products in the bathrooms. They are even in the boys’ bathrooms.”

If there was one act that epitomized his care, concern, and compassion for women, particularly young women and even young trans women, this is it.

This guy makes me proud to be a Democrat. Really proud.

Yeah, MAGA, you should definitely run with this one. “Tampon Tim” indeed.

Expand full comment

I say “even young trans women” in the sense that it demonstrates a deeper understanding of the issues than even occurs to most people (self included before I read this).

Expand full comment

PPS: And, of course, I should have said “young trans men”, but this just demonstrates my point about Tom Walz’s thoughtfulness even more.

Expand full comment

Not for nothing, the RW swear machine is highlighting the "boys' bathrooms" aspect, even though Robyn has already thoroughly debunked that there is nothing in the legislation that says anything about where the FHPs are to be provided.

Do Republican's have gender-restricted bathrooms at home ?

The men probably have toilets in the basement, like Al Bundy.

I moved to this country 3 years ago and suddenly, I’m seeing versions of Tim Walz everywhere I go in my small California town. And now I’m realising that the white baseball-cap-wearing, truck-driving dads I’ve assumed are, of course, going to be Trump supporters might actually not be. And that they might be good, decent, caring men who don’t necessarily need to be handled with caution after all.

Expand full comment

Thank goodness! These are the men who raised me. I married this guy. Maybe sometimes they look a little redneck, but they really are good guys who will stand up for anyone who needs it. They are disgusted by TFG and JD (and really the whole republican party). They volunteer and quietly take care of their neighbors. I am thrilled to have the badass, smart Harris and the amazing Walz to vote for. I’m 45 and have never felt so happy to vote. Truly the first time I’ve felt like I’m going to be able to vote for people who actually represent my family personally. A strong and fearless woman who knows her job, and a man who is honored to be a servant to his community and country.

Yes, I'm always worried about that, too, but maybe I'll dial it back a bit, because you're right.

Rush Limbaugh is still dead, right?

Godsdammit. The "dad [they] wish they had instead of the one they lost to Fox News" hits really hard.

Expand full comment

Yes, it did. My dad passed away before Dump’s reign of terror, but I lost my only brother to this shit. We haven’t spoken since 2017, and I doubt that we ever will. So many families fractured by this incessant evil.

Seriously. That followed by mentioning Rush Limbaugh as well had me feeling like I was being directly addressed. 😩

Someone on Elno’s Xithole app said Walz gives “tonic masculinity” - refreshing and healing - as opposed to toxic masculinity. I hope that catches on.

What a great job profiling Tim Walz and eviscerating Maga masculinity! I am loving the combination of strong, black woman and big dad energy. Harris and Walz are just so… Normal, as opposed to, you know, the other guys.

Tim Walz makes me miss my own dad and feel very nostalgic for my home state.

It’s a treat to get to watch the rest of the country discover Minnesota charm.

Expand full comment

I have only one disagreement with this post. I don't think the MAGA men are afraid of Walz because he's the man they can never be. They're afraid of him because they either don't want, or are afraid, to do the rigorous self-inquiry that it would require of them to grow into being like Tim. They'd rather try to dominate and terrorize the rest of humanity than willingly submit to the discomfort they would have to endure to become truly self-assured and confident enough that they don't have to manipulate or force people into pretending to respect them.

Expand full comment

I would suspect that a lot of them are deeply troubled and hurting from childhood trauma inflicted by family members or their churches, and their MAGA armor is supposed to protect them from humiliation. A few are probably lazy as hell, but I'd bet the fear to open up any line of inquiry is probably nearly overwhelming.

Expand full comment

I don’t see why it requires rigorous self-inquiry, just motivation to not be a dick

Expand full comment

That motivation will never be there for anyone who is so self unaware that they don't know they're being a dick. Every single one of us is way more influenced than we tend to realize by social conditioning that creates or reinforces unconscious biases. There's no way to be motivated to undo unconscious bias without intentional rigorous self-inquiry that challenges all that crap.

My favorite from the introduction rally in PA on Tuesday was the way he kinda rolled his eyes and shook his head at the end of certain lines in that very dad/coach way, as if to say, "Can you believe these knuckleheads?" It reminds me a bit of when Joe Biden says "malarkey!"

Tim Waltz is a happy man who does good things.

What a breath of fresh air TW is. And he may start new trends in the media that even they may not be able to stifle. Like “dad humor “ that I am a perpetrator of, being the voice of the real “silent majority “, those guys who just do good things and don’t bring attention to themselves because of it, because I tend to think those guys really are the majority but are too “silent” to be on the news. And the best of all, those positive/negative comparisons “Tim Walz is the guy who will cut your lawn if you broke your leg, JDV is the guy who would report you to the HOA cause your lawn is too high.” (From an unnamed Substack author). It’s about time those guys got their due, and one of them is gonna be our VP!

My dad was more like trump. A womanizer, liar, business cheat who was charming and got away with embezzlement and rape and sexual abuse of his kids. The last 8 years have really done a number on me! 😂 😭 This ticket has me beside myself with joy and hope! Are there really good men like Tim Walz out there? Part of me is afraid it’s an act, like the charm part of the narcissist’s need to win you over... I hope not! I’m so glad to read the stories here from others who have good men in their lives. Maybe I can put this baggage of suspicion and fear down for a little while and reclaim my brain. Thank you Kamala for choosing this man!

I would like to clarify that the MN law requires products to be supplied in bathrooms menstruating student use. I feel the language of the law is important. MN joined the majority of other states in not specifying genders associated with bathrooms. Also, I believe more than half of US states have this law. The ONLY reason it’s an issue is because Walz is the VP pick.
